A Minnesota man who claimed killing his roommate was an act of mercy will spend the rest of his life in prison without parole.
Jacob John Audie, 37, was sentenced on Tuesday, Aug. 25.
The sentence of mandatory life without parole was handed down for premeditated murder.
The victim was identified as his 72-year-old roommate, Michael Maurice Schille.
The killing took place in South St. Paul.
Audie had lived with Schille and served as the older man’s caretaker.
On April 11, 2025, Audie shot Schille inside the residence they shared.
The weapon used was Schille’s own AR-style rifle.
Then Audie called 911 and reported the shooting to authorities.

Long Island art teacher John Kennedy, 53, accused of a sexual relationship with a student, is arrested for stalking.
Audie later characterized the act as a “mercy killing.”
He argued that he shot the man to end Schille’s suffering.
But the court did not accept his explanation.
The matter was resolved through a stipulated-facts trial.
On Aug. 19, Dakota County District Judge Kathryn Iverson found Audie guilty of first-degree premeditated murder.
Judge Iverson also found him guilty of second-degree murder.
Following the findings, Audie reportedly showed no remorse for the crime.
He stated that he “would do it again.”
Minnesota law mandates a term of life without parole for first-degree premeditated murder.
He will remain in prison for the rest of his life.
