A 42-year-old Iowa mother has been sentenced to two years in prison after admitting responsibility for the death of her son.
Her three-year-old child, Myles Holmes, died after being left inside a hot vehicle.
On June 28, 2025, emergency crews were called to the 3400 block of Hawthorn Drive Southwest in Bondurant.
First responders arrived at the scene after Myles was discovered unresponsive.
Paramedics attempted to revive the three-year-old boy.
Myles could not be saved.
His mother, Tiffani Huff Holmes, spoke with investigators following the discovery.
Holmes initially told law enforcement that she had awakened and found Myles inside the garage.
Yet evidence eventually revealed a different sequence of events.
Authorities determined that Holmes had consumed alcohol before driving with three children that day.
She returned home and went inside the residence.
Holmes left Myles behind in the vehicle parked in the driveway.
Then she continued drinking.
Outside temperatures climbed above 90 degrees while the child remained inside the vehicle.
Myles died from overheating.
Holmes was initially charged with child endangerment resulting in death.
On July 21, 2026, Holmes pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter.
Involuntary manslaughter is an aggravated misdemeanor carrying a maximum sentence of two years in prison.
At sentencing, prosecutors acknowledged that Holmes had taken significant steps toward sobriety.

Texas coach Maurice Heade, who allegedly choked his 15-year-old son as an officer struggled to intervene, was arrested on campus.
But prosecutors also pointed to her history before Myles’ death.
They stated that Holmes had undergone treatment at least three previous times and continued drinking.
District Judge Samantha Gronewald addressed Holmes during the proceedings.
Judge Gronewald noted that Holmes continued consuming excessive amounts of alcohol even after her son died.
Holmes told the court about the actions she had taken since the incident.
She stated that she had completed both inpatient and outpatient treatment programs.
She told the court she had spent a year living in a sober living home.
She added that she regularly attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.
“I feel remorse, regret and pure hatred toward myself,” she told the judge.
The boy’s father, Marcus Holmes, also addressed the court.
Marcus Holmes said he had repeatedly pleaded with Holmes to stop drinking.
“Instead of stopping, she became better at hiding it,” he told the court.
He said he still wanted Holmes to have a relationship with their other child if she could remain sober.
And he stated that he wanted accountability for what happened to Myles.
Holmes requested probation from the court.
On August 28, 2026, Judge Gronewald rejected the request for probation.
The judge imposed the maximum sentence allowed for the offense.
Judge Gronewald cited Myles’ death in her ruling.
She cited the “severe and lasting emotional harm” caused by the case.
Holmes was ordered to serve two years in prison.
