“I SAW HEADLIGHTS COMING TOWARD ME”!!! BELIEVE IT OR NOT, DPS SAYS BOTH A PICKUP DRIVER AND A FOUR-WHEELER OPERATOR TOOK EVASIVE ACTION TOWARD THE SAME DITCH… LEAVING TWO TEENAGERS DEAD IN NEWTON COUNTY.
Two teenage boys were killed Saturday night in a crash south of Newton.
The victims were 14 and 15 years old.
The crash occurred on Highway 87 near County Road 3036.
It involved a four-wheeler and a pickup truck.
According to DPS, the four-wheeler was traveling south on the northbound shoulder.
The four-wheeler was moving around a curve.
An approaching pickup driver saw the four-wheeler’s headlights coming toward him.
The pickup took evasive action toward the east ditch.
But DPS says the four-wheeler operator also took evasive action toward the east ditch.
That maneuver contributed to the collision.
Both teenagers were transported to Jasper Memorial Hospital.
They were pronounced deceased at the hospital.
Their identities have not been released.
The pickup driver was identified as 56-year-old Gary Riley of Newton.
Riley was not injured.
The loss has prompted an outpouring of support for the Newton community.
Neighboring schools have publicly shared condolences and prayers.
Jasper ISD, Buna ISD and Kirbyville CISD are among those schools.
Merryville High School in Louisiana also publicly shared condolences and prayers.
Newton VFD reported that three trucks and five firefighters responded to the scene.
And the Newton County Sheriff’s Office also assisted DPS.
The crash remains under investigation.
