Retired Arizona cop, 92, fatally stabbed his 89-year-old wife during paranoid delusion over bank accounts: cops

A former Arizona police officer who is reportedly suffering from dementia has been arrested after he allegedly stabbed his wife to death.

Authorities said the fatal dispute began when the couple got into a fight about finances.

John Biggs Jr. has been charged with second-degree murder following the death of his wife, Jane Biggs.

The defendant was also charged with two counts of aggravated assault.

Officers with the Goodyear Police Department learned of the killing when they were called to a home on August 24.

Police arrived at the residence at approximately 1:30 p.m. after receiving a report of a deceased person.

The crime was reported by the defendant’s son.

The son had traveled to Arizona from out of state to visit his father’s house.

He decided to make the trip following a phone call in which his father allegedly made concerning statements.

Authorities spoke to the son, who claimed John sounded “overly paranoid and delusional” during their conversation on the phone.

The son said his father believed Jane had stolen “a large amount of money from his account.”

He added that John believed his wife was saying mean things about him to his friends.

Those statements prompted the son to travel to the home to check on him.

Upon entering the residence, the son found the 92-year-old sitting in a recliner.

The defendant is in a wheelchair and wears hearing aids, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by Law & Crime.

John allegedly told his son that he stabbed 89-year-old Jane.

He also allegedly told his son that he “should not go into the bedroom.”

But the son went into the other room.

He found Jane on the bed surrounded by blood.

Police were dispatched to the residence immediately.

Jane was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said she had three or four stab wounds to the neck.

Investigators also found defensive injuries on her hands and arms.

John spoke to police after officers arrived at the home.

He admitted to killing his wife, according to court documents.

John told officers that he “confronted” Jane about his investment documents and his money.

Jane denied taking anything from his accounts.

“John Jr. believed he had lost everything and had nowhere else to go and became enraged to the point of killing the victim,” detectives wrote in the affidavit.

Jane allegedly tried to fight back when the attack occurred.

Yet John allegedly continued to stab her.

After he killed his wife, John reportedly took several pills in an apparent suicide attempt.

Then he sat down in the recliner and fell asleep.

He did not wake up until the next morning when his son entered the home.

John was subsequently taken into custody.

During a bond hearing, defense attorney Zach Murphy said his client was apparently experiencing dementia, according to KSAZ.

“There appears to be some odd behavior that didn’t exist before,” Murphy added.

It reportedly took about 20 minutes for John to get his hearing aids working during the proceeding, according to KSAZ.

The defendant also reportedly attempted to share his side of the story during the hearing.

And his attorney instructed him to stop speaking.

It is not currently clear if John has entered a plea.

Bond for John has been set at $1 million.

He is scheduled to return to court on Friday, September 4.

The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
