Jackson toddler gunned down in bed alongside two sisters during targeted marijuana robbery: cops

A 26-year-old driver took part in an armed robbery that left two sisters and a toddler shot to death inside a Jackson home, police said.

Mikala Young, 26, faces three counts of capital murder in Jackson, Mississippi, according to court documents.

On June 27, 2026, at around 9:15 p.m., officers responded to a reported shooting at a residence in the 300 block of Queen Alexandria Lane, police said.

Responding officers discovered two women and a toddler dead inside the home, according to investigators.

All three victims had been shot multiple times, police said.

Authorities identified the victims as 25-year-old Keyana Weathersby, her 30-year-old sister Erica Weathersby, and Keyana’s 2-year-old son, Camari Givens, police said.

Camari was in bed when the shooting occurred, police said. The toddler did not appear to have been caught in crossfire, according to investigators.

Detectives initially described the slayings as a targeted attack, police said. Investigators did not publicly release an immediate motive, according to authorities.

The fatal encounter allegedly began with a plan to purchase marijuana from Camari’s father, Cadelmon Givens, who lived at the home, investigators said.

One of the male suspects had been childhood friends with Givens, according to testimony presented in court.

The group learned Givens sold marijuana and had recently won a significant amount of money, investigators said.

The original plan to buy marijuana then changed into a plan to rob Givens of his money and drugs, police said.

One of the suspects called Givens and told him the group was waiting outside the residence, investigators said.

When Givens stepped outside, Cornelius Carter and Devone Modacure began shooting at him, police said. Givens managed to run from the gunfire and hid behind a neighbor’s house, according to authorities.

Carter and Modacure then allegedly entered the home, police said.

Camari was shot and killed inside a bedroom, investigators said.

Keyana Weathersby was shot in the living room, police said.

Her sister Erica was initially in the living room before running into a bathroom, where she was shot, investigators said.

Young and Jordan Carter remained inside a vehicle while the shootings took place, investigators said.

Young allegedly knew the group had gone to the home to commit a robbery, police said.

The driver pulled away from the scene after hearing gunfire, investigators said.

Approximately two pounds of marijuana were taken from the residence and divided among the suspects, authorities said.

On June 28, 2026, an unoccupied red 2020 Mitsubishi Mirage was recovered at Manhattan Park in North Jackson, police said.

The vehicle belonged to one of the victims and had been taken during the killings, according to police.

Tips from the public helped investigators identify the vehicle involved in the case, police said.

On June 29, 2026, officers spotted the car on Highway 18 near Maddox Road, police said.

The driver refused to stop before the vehicle was surrounded by officers, according to police. Two suspects were then taken into custody, authorities said.

Police identified the pair as 28-year-old Cornelius Carter and 28-year-old Jordan Carter, police said. The two men are not related, according to authorities.

Both men were charged with capital murder and denied bond, court records state.

Cornelius Carter was also charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, police said.

During Jordan Carter’s initial court proceedings, prosecutors said he had previously faced aggravated assault and aggravated robbery charges in Texas.

Investigators later arrested Young in connection with the triple homicide, police said.

Four people have now been charged in the case: Young, Cornelius Carter, Jordan Carter and Devone Modacure, according to police.

Young is charged with three counts of capital murder, burglary and armed robbery, court records state.

Authorities said the defendant drove the other three suspects to the home on Queen Alexandria Lane.

Young and Cornelius Carter were in a relationship, police said.

After leaving the scene, Young allegedly dropped Jordan Carter off near his home, investigators said. She then spent the night with Cornelius Carter, her boyfriend, according to police.

On September 1, 2026, the 26-year-old defendant appeared in court and was denied bond for a second time, records show.

The judge described Young as a “clear and present danger to the community,” according to court records.

Young has denied participating in the robbery or the killings, court records show.

While being escorted in handcuffs and shackles after the hearing, Young told reporters, “I’m innocent, I ain’t kill nobody. I ain’t kill nobody. They tried to kill me and my kids, so I stayed there, but I didn’t kill nobody.”

The defendant then identified the people she claims actually committed the killings, reporters said.

“Cornelius Carter and Bunny killed them people, I ain’t kill nobody. Cornelius Carter and Bunny killed them, that baby and them two females. I ain’t kill nobody,” Young said.

Young did not explain who she was referring to as “Bunny,” according to reporters.

Young’s attorney told the court she believed she was only driving the men to purchase marijuana and had no knowledge that they intended to commit a robbery, records show.

Her defense also argued that Young did not leave the scene sooner because she was allegedly being held against her will. Investigators maintain that the driver knew the group intended to rob Givens, police said.

Police believe the rifle used during the triple homicide had previously been stolen from a Jackson police officer’s vehicle, authorities said.

None of the four suspects currently charged in the killings are believed to have stolen the weapon, police said.

Authorities have said additional people could still be connected to the case as the investigation continues.

Young remains held without bond as her case is expected to be presented to a grand jury, which will determine whether there is sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to trial, according to authorities.
