La Crosse woman Cortney Halverson arrested for Main Street arson — hit with bail jumping charges after downtown cameras identify her

A 34-year-old Wisconsin woman is facing an arson charge after an early-morning fire broke out in downtown La Crosse, police said.

Cortney Halverson, 34, was taken into custody following the incident in the 300 block of Main Street, according to authorities.

The arrest occurred on Saturday after the blaze erupted, officials said.

Investigators have not released many details regarding exactly how the fire started, according to authorities.

Police have also not disclosed what they believe happened prior to the blaze, the department said.

The La Crosse Police Department assisted the La Crosse Fire Department with the investigation into the downtown blaze, officials said.

Downtown surveillance cameras played an important role in the probe, authorities said. A collaboration between the departments, along with an immediate sharing of resources and camera footage, helped investigators identify Halverson as a suspect, police said.

The suspect was subsequently arrested for arson of a building without the owner’s consent, authorities said.

Halverson was also arrested on a charge of misdemeanor bail jumping, police said. She already had another case pending at the time of the arrest, according to officials.

Authorities have not yet explained what that previous case involves, police said. Investigators have also not indicated whether they believe it has any connection to the alleged arson, according to officials.

Halverson is accused and not convicted as the case remains pending, according to authorities.
