What toxicology reports revealed about four New York children killed in mom and grandmother murder-suicide

A 44-year-old upstate New York mother allegedly poisoned and killed her four children alongside their grandmother before both women committed suicide, authorities said.

Sarah Myers, 44, and Amy Steadman, 64, died in the June murder-suicide in Mechanicsville, authorities said.

The four young victims were found with kratom and an allergy medication that induces drowsiness in their systems, according to a new report.

Details of the June filicide in Mechanicsville emerged from a toxicology report, sources told NewsChannel 13.

Harper Harmon, 13, and his three younger siblings were all given the substances before they died, according to the report.

The other victims were identified as Hudson Harmon, 11, Gracelynn Harmon, 10, and Gavin Harmon, 10, according to the findings.

All four children were given kratom as well as diphenhydramine, the active ingredient in Benadryl, the report stated.

Diphenhydramine is an allergy medication that induces drowsiness, according to the report.

Kratom is a psychoactive herbal extract that can produce opioid-like effects, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

The herbal substance is also commonly referred to as “gas station heroin,” according to the Food and Drug Administration.

The drugs were discovered in the systems of Harper, Hudson, Gracelynn and Gavin Harmon following the Mechanicsville filicide, according to the report.

The four children were allegedly killed by Myers and Steadman before the two women took their own lives, authorities said.

Harper, Hudson and Gracelynn all died after being poisoned, authorities said. Ten-year-old Gavin Harmon was knifed while attempting to defend himself, authorities added.

Myers had been locked in a bitter custody battle with her ex-husband, Brady Harmon, at the time of the killings, according to reports.

Harmon lives in Utah and had not seen his children in person since November 2019, according to the report.

The children were murdered shortly before they were expected to spend the summer with their father, according to the report. They were scheduled to travel to the Beehive State, the report stated.

Authorities recovered a letter left behind by Myers following the slayings, authorities said.

In the note, Myers alleged that Harmon had abused her and their four children, authorities said. She claimed the slayings were the only way to save the youngsters from further abuse, the letter stated.

Harmon denied the claims of abuse, and said there is “a special place in hell” for his ex-wife.

“My kids suffered,” Harmon told a local station. “To poison them and also to stab them – there’s a special place in hell for people like that.”
