A 36-year-old man was shot by police after chasing a wounded victim into a Tulsa restaurant and opening fire, authorities said.
Dion Patterson, 36, was taken into custody following the shooting in Tulsa, Oklahoma, according to police.
On September 3, 2026, at around 6:45 p.m., officers responded to Rozay’s Wingz near 51st Street North and Peoria Avenue after receiving reports of gunfire, police said.
Officers arrived to encounter an armed man inside the restaurant after another man had been shot multiple times, according to investigators.
Both men survived the shooting, police said.
Investigators said Patterson and the other man had initially pulled into the restaurant parking lot and begun fighting. Authorities have not publicly disclosed what caused the fight or how the two men knew each other, according to police.
During the altercation, Patterson allegedly pulled out a handgun, and the two men struggled over the weapon, police said.
Patterson then shot the man in the foot, according to police.
The injured man attempted to escape in his pickup truck while the suspect allegedly continued firing at him, investigators said.
As the victim pulled into the street, his truck collided with another vehicle carrying a driver and three children, police said. Patterson allegedly continued firing in the direction of both vehicles, but no one inside the second vehicle was injured, investigators said.
The wounded man then abandoned his truck and ran back toward Rozay’s Wingz while the gunman allegedly chased him and continued shooting, investigators said.
Police said the victim was struck by another gunshot, this time in the torso, as he attempted to escape into the restaurant.
Rozay’s Wingz owner Kenny Smith said he, his wife, employees and customers were inside when the shooting victim ran into the business trying to get away from Patterson.
Smith said the victim managed to climb through part of the ceiling or back area of the restaurant as he tried to get farther away from the gunman.
Smith began moving employees and customers into a more secure area and locked an interior door, according to his account.
According to Smith, Patterson continued pursuing the victim and allegedly forced his way through a sliding serving window to gain access to the secured area.
Smith moved the others into a bathroom while he remained outside the room attempting to keep the gunman away from them, he said.
Two officers arrived as Patterson made his way into the restaurant lobby, police said.
Police said the shooting victim and employees had already retreated into the bathroom when the officers encountered Patterson and ordered him to show his hands.
Instead, Patterson allegedly pulled out the handgun and fired twice at the officers, police said. Neither officer was struck, according to investigators.
The officers backed out of the restaurant and waited for additional units to arrive, police said.
As officers repositioned outside, police said they heard screaming and gunshots coming from inside as the suspect allegedly fired toward the room where employees were barricaded. Patterson also yelled that he had hostages inside the restaurant, although Smith knew the people inside had barricaded themselves away from him, according to Smith.
Officers reentered the restaurant and located Patterson at the end of a long hallway, according to police.
Police said officers repeatedly ordered Patterson to show his hands. Patterson instead allegedly raised the handgun and pointed it toward officers, investigators said.
Two officers opened fire, striking Patterson twice, according to police.
Officers recovered Patterson’s gun and took him into custody, police said.
Patterson and the original shooting victim were transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to authorities.
The two officers who fired their weapons were placed on paid administrative leave, police said. The action is standard following an officer-involved shooting, according to authorities.
After Patterson was treated and released from the hospital, he was booked into the Tulsa County Jail on several counts of assault with a deadly weapon, police said.
