A North Carolina man was arrested Friday just one day after leaving jail following an armed standoff and a series of alleged crimes, authorities said.
Austin Riggs, of North Carolina, had been released from jail on Thursday, according to authorities.
The newly released man allegedly stole a vehicle and took off with his own child, deputies said.
Riggs took the child despite clear legal restrictions. Court records indicated he was not permitted to be with the child without supervision, according to deputies.
Authorities eventually tracked the suspect to a home outside La Grange, deputies said.
Riggs barricaded himself inside the house, according to authorities.
Investigators said he also made another stop along the way. Riggs allegedly broke into a neighboring home and stole a shotgun, investigators said.
The suspect allegedly stepped onto the porch carrying the firearm at one point during the standoff, authorities said.
Riggs then retreated back inside the house, deputies said.
Officers repeatedly ordered the suspect to surrender. Riggs eventually came out and was arrested, authorities said.
The child was found safe following the standoff, and no injuries were reported, deputies said.
The child was reunited with their grandmother, according to officials.
Riggs now faces charges across two counties, authorities said.
Those charges include breaking and entering, larceny of a firearm, second-degree arson, motor vehicle theft and child abuse, according to records.
Court records reportedly show multiple misdemeanor convictions for the defendant over the past decade. Those prior offenses include two DWI convictions since 2020, records show.
Riggs is accused of the new charges and has not been convicted of them, records show.
The defendant is now back in jail on a $60,000 bond, authorities said.
