A 32-year-old Southern California son entered a pretrial time waiver after being indicted on murder charges in the deaths of his parents, according to court proceedings.
Nick Reiner, 32, is the son of the Brentwood couple.
The defendant appeared in court for a pretrial hearing after being indicted on first-degree murder charges for the December 2025 killings, records show.
He entered the courtroom wearing a brown jail uniform, accompanied by white socks and black shoes.
His dark brown hair was trimmed short, while his stubbly beard was grown out. An onlooker commented that the beard was not unkempt and that the accused man looked healthy and had gained weight.
During the appearance, the judge asked the defendant whether he understood what a general time waiver is and what it does.
The accused man replied with an audible “yes.”
The judge then asked if he was entering into a general time waiver.
The defendant responded again in the affirmative.
A general time waiver is a legal agreement where a defendant gives up their Constitutional right to a speedy trial within a set of specific statutory deadlines.
When the hearing ended, the accused man said “thank you” to the judge before he was escorted out with his attorney.
He looked straight ahead while leaving the courtroom, showing no emotion.
Earlier in the day, the Los Angeles district attorney told reporters that prosecutors would not pursue capital punishment in the case.
“After a careful and thorough review of all these factors, the district attorney’s office will not be seeking the death penalty in this case,” District Attorney Nathan Hochman, 62, said before the pretrial hearing.
“That means that the maximum sentence that Mr. Reiner will be looking at is life without the possibility of parole,” Hochman said.
On December 14, 2025, police arrested the son near the campus of the University of Southern California.
The arrest took place hours after his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, were found dead inside their Brentwood home, police said.
Rob Reiner was 78 years old.
Michele Reiner was 70.
The three family members had attended a Christmas party at the residence of comedian Conan O’Brien the previous evening, observers said.

Witnesses at the gathering reported that the father and his son became involved in an argument.
On December 17, 2025, the defendant’s siblings issued their first public statement regarding the loss of their parents.
“Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day,” Jake, 35, and Romy, 28, said in a statement to TMZ.
“The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience,” the siblings said.
“They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends,” the statement continued.
“We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life,” the brother and sister added.
“We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave,” the siblings said.
On August 12, a grand jury formally indicted the son on two counts of first-degree murder, according to court records.
The indictment carried a special circumstances allegation that the murders were committed by means of lying in wait, prosecutors said.
He entered a plea of not guilty to all charges.
“This was a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing,” Hochman announced in an August statement.
“The indictment unsealed today also adds a special circumstance allegation that the defendant committed the murders by means of lying in wait,” the prosecutor said.
“We hope that by having a grand jury return an indictment in this case, it will bring us one step closer to a trial and achieving justice,” Hochman added.
Later that month, Jake Reiner spoke about life following his brother’s arrest in his first television interview with ABC7 in Los Angeles.
“I mean [Nick is] in jail so, you know it’s — it’s like I physically lost my parents and then Nick was arrested and it’s like, now it’s just me and Romy,” he explained.
The brother also addressed the emotional aftermath of the killings during the broadcast.
“For me, [grief] manifests into anger, it manifests into rage, into how unfair this was, how I didn’t get a say in what happened,” the sibling told the station.
“I didn’t get to stop it from happening,” he said.
“I had no choice in the matter, and I just have to accept the reality of it,” he continued.
“And to me, that’s one of the most infuriating parts of all of this,” he added.
The defendant has been held without bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Downtown Los Angeles since his December 2025 arrest, according to records.
