The boy walked through the mansion hall like he didn’t belong to the light.
His t-shirt was stained and torn. His hair was messy and damp. He moved slowly between the elegant guests, who stepped aside with quiet confusion.
At the center of the grand room, bathed in warm sunset light pouring through tall windows, sat a woman in a wheelchair. She wore a floor-length gown covered in silver sequins that caught every ray of light. A large diamond ring glittered on her finger.
She was speaking softly with someone beside her when she noticed the boy approaching.

For a moment, she offered a polite, distant smile.
Then the boy stopped directly in front of her.
He leaned in close — so close that his messy hair nearly brushed her cheek. His face was only inches from hers.
The woman’s smile disappeared.
Her eyes widened in pure shock. Her breath caught. Tears filled her eyes almost instantly and began to spill down her cheeks. She stared at him as if she were seeing a ghost.
The boy looked back at her with wide, uncertain eyes.
Neither of them spoke.
But in that silent, golden moment, everything changed.
