West Virginia Woman Sentenced to 22 Years in Prison After Setting Fire to Thornton Home

A 33-year-old West Virginia woman has been sentenced to more than two decades behind bars.

Ashten Kalli Teets admitted she intentionally set fire to a Taylor County residence.

The blaze followed a domestic dispute.

In December 2023, Teets entered the carport of a home in Thornton.

Authorities said she arrived at the property with a lighter.

She then intentionally ignited a support pole attached to the house.

The fire spread into the surrounding grass.

It damaged personal property at the scene.

And the flames scorched a nearby vehicle.

But the allegations extended beyond the fire itself.

Investigators accused Teets of trying to conceal her involvement in the crime afterward.

According to investigators, she obtained receipts from businesses in an apparent attempt to establish where she had been.

Teets eventually entered into a plea agreement.

She pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree arson.

She also pleaded guilty to two counts of third-degree arson.

As part of the agreement, several other charges against her were dismissed.

Those dismissed charges included burglary.

A count of starting a fire on another person’s land was also dismissed.

Additionally, prosecutors dismissed a charge of forgery.

Then Judge Shawn D. Nines handed down the prison sentence.

Judge Nines sentenced Teets to 18 years for the first-degree arson conviction.

He added two separate two-year sentences for the third-degree arson counts.

The combined penalties totaled 22 years in prison.

Teets was also ordered to pay restitution to the victims.

The final amount of that restitution will be determined at a later hearing.
