Chucky-masked goon accused of terrorizing Philadelphia jogger tried to break out of handcuffs: marshals

A two-week manhunt came to an end in Nevada.

Zymire Hughes, 22, was taken into custody following an alleged early morning spree in Philadelphia.

Authorities said Hughes attempted to free himself after being captured.

“He was not a happy man being brought into custody,” Robert Clark, the US Marshals Supervisory Deputy, said.

“He actually tried to get out of the handcuffs and had to be subdued by deputy marshals.”

Hughes is accused of terrorizing strangers on August 12 while wearing a mask from the “Child’s Play” slasher movies.

Police said he allegedly chased six people while wearing the Chucky disguise.

He was seemingly recording the scares for his own amusement.

Investigators suspect Hughes craved social media attention.

Authorities stopped short of revealing an official motive.

The sequence of encounters began early in the morning.

Hughes allegedly threatened five people after being refused service at a Dunkin’ store at around 5:20 a.m. for apparently acting erratically.

He wore the mask while coming down an escalator near Philadelphia’s City Hall.

Among those targeted was a 40-year-old female jogger.

Hughes allegedly chased and threatened her.

“Are you ready to die?” Hughes allegedly asked the woman.

The woman suffered an injury while trying to run away.

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner addressed the incident at a press conference on Wednesday.

“It’s rotten behavior,” Krasner told reporters.

Krasner revealed that the injuries the woman suffered “were serious enough to put her in the hospital for a few days.”

“I don’t consider this to be a high school kid acting out. This is someone with a troubling history who has to be reigned in.”

Krasner also spoke directly about criminal conduct masked as online entertainment.

“You can’t just say ‘I’m an influencer and commit crimes,’” Krasner said.

“You can’t just terrorize people, terrorize a community because the reaction of someone who believes she might die at any second you find funny.”

“I don’t think it’s funny at all. I think it’s awful. And if you’re dumb enough to record it and make videos, we can use them in court.”

Then Hughes made his way to Suburban Station at around 5:35 a.m.

Two Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority officers stopped him inside the station.

The SEPTA officers ordered Hughes to remove the Chucky mask.

Hughes complied with the request from the officers.

He was still wearing a black COVID-19 mask underneath.

The transportation officers followed him.

Yet Hughes managed to catch a bus and return to his apartment.

Hughes had been in Philadelphia for a few weeks at the time of the August 12 incidents.

On August 19, he left the city.

Hughes traveled to Trenton, New Jersey, to catch a flight to Florida.

He then took a flight to Las Vegas.

Hughes had been living in Las Vegas since February.

He moved to a different apartment when his photograph began circulating online and in news media.

During the search, investigators received a tip indicating Hughes may have fled to Nevada.

He was arrested on Tuesday at an apartment in the southeast section of the city.

Hughes had been staying at that apartment for five days prior to his capture.

Clark issued a statement following the arrest.

“By hiding behind a Chucky-style Halloween mask, Hughes terrorized Philadelphia residents and believed he could evade law enforcement. He was wrong,” Clark said.

“His arrest should send a clear message: you can hide your face, but you can’t hide from the elite investigators of the US Marshal Service.”

And court history shows this was not Hughes’ first encounter with law enforcement.

Four years earlier, Hughes stole a police officer’s badge and threw it down a drain, according to NBC10.

Hughes had been ordered to participate in a diversion program that would have enabled him to avoid a criminal conviction.

He was subsequently removed from the diversion course after getting into trouble with the law.

The specific offense that led to his removal from the program remains unclear.

Hughes has been charged with assault and making terroristic threats.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.

Hughes is set to be extradited to Philadelphia to face the charges.

The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
