South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster has officially suspended Chester County Councilman John Agee from office.
The executive suspension came as a criminal case moves forward against him.
That case involves allegations of conspiracy and misconduct in office.
Under the governor’s order, Agee is barred from acting as a councilman during the proceedings.
The allegations against him stem from a broader investigation.
That inquiry involved former Richburg Fire Chief Stewart T. Melton and former Lt. Zachary Gibson.
Melton and Gibson were charged in connection with the alleged misuse of Hurricane Helene relief funds.
Those charges also involved claims regarding the fire department’s response efforts.
Then came findings regarding state property.
Investigators said Melton obtained police vehicles through the state surplus program.
He did so after representing that the vehicles were intended for the fire department, according to investigators.
Authorities allege those vehicles were never put into service for the fire department.

Authorities allege the surplus police cars were instead sold to Agee for his personal use.
Those transactions resulted in conspiracy charges against both Agee and Melton.
And county leaders took their own action.
Chester County Council separately paid for a third-party internal investigation into the matter.
That inquiry examined allegations involving Agee and local fire officials.
Officials said the findings and recommendations from that internal probe will be presented publicly on Sept. 21.
Meanwhile, the impact showed at the county building.
Agee’s council seat was vacant at the most recent meeting following the suspension.
Yet his political campaign remains on the calendar.
Agee is scheduled to run for re-election in November.
Agee is charged.
He is not convicted.
The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
