The victim of a deadly mass stabbing in Oakland this week has been identified as 58-year-old Gonsalo Lopez.
Lopez was killed during the rampage on Monday, August 25.
Family members this week mourned the Oakland father.
He was remembered as a man who kindly helped out family and friends.
He even fed the homeless.
Lopez lived with his wife and three sons not far from Cesar Chavez Park.
He was a longtime chef.
His 28-year-old son, Kenny Romero, spoke to the Mercury News about his father’s life.
Lopez would regularly take meals to the park to feed people who were homeless.
He had only just returned home from a vacation to Honduras, where he is from, to visit an adopted daughter.
On that fateful night, Lopez did not have food with him when he went to visit people.
Romero said that his father “just helped people. He was a really good person. He would go to the park as often as he could and they would always say ‘thank you.’”
Romero added that Lopez was a great father who sacrificed for his family.
“He was a super great father,” Romero said.
“He worked really hard to give us every opportunity. Whenever we needed something he would help us.”
But the visit to the park ended in violence.

Jose Jesus Rodriguez, 34, is accused of the 30-minute series of attacks across Cesar Chavez Park and three other locations.
The attacks took place in Oakland’s Fruitvale district.
Police indicated that the stabbings were a series of apparently random attacks.
Lopez died following injuries sustained at Cesar Chavez Park.
Four other victims were injured during the spree.
The four other people stabbed on Monday were a 47-year-old man, a 31-year-old man, a 52-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man.
Rodriguez himself was described as a homeless man on parole for a previous knifing spree.
In 2019, he stabbed an Uber driver and a garbage collector.
He was sent to prison for that attack.
In 2023, Rodriguez was released on parole.
After his release, Rodriguez was hit with multiple parole violations, KTVU reported.
He also failed to find work.
And he allegedly swung a wooden board at two people.
Rodriguez also allegedly tried to bite off a police officer’s ear.
A parole agent wrote last year that “there are no programs to appropriately address Rodriguez’s escalating behavior,” adding he “poses a significant threat to the community.”
Following Monday’s attacks, Rodriguez was charged with murder, attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.
The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
