A father and mother in North Carolina face attempted first-degree murder charges in connection with severe injuries suffered by their toddler.
Kiran Pasunuri, 44, and Vasantha Pasunuri, 30, are also charged with felony child abuse.
Prosecutors said their two-year-old son sustained a massive brain bleed and bleeding in both retinas.
The child also suffered five spinal fractures.
Medical evaluations revealed a combination of new and old injuries.
The damage was so extensive that surgeons removed a portion of the boy’s skull to save his life.
Prosecutors said medical staff determined the child was “basically brain dead.”
According to prosecutors, the two-year-old will never walk, turn himself in bed or do more than breathe until another complication occurs.
The boy remains in a vegetative state.
On June 2, the child arrived unconscious at a hospital in Garner, North Carolina.
An indictment alleges that the attempted murder took place on June 2.
Separate indictments accuse both parents of abusing their son between January 1 and June 1.
Those indictments further allege that both parents failed to obtain medical treatment for the boy across that five-month timeframe.
But court records do not explain exactly how the child suffered the injuries.
The records reviewed also do not specify which parent allegedly inflicted each injury.
On June 26, Garner police arrested Kiran Pasunuri.
Authorities charged him with attempted first-degree murder the following day.
He faces five criminal counts in total.

The counts include one charge of attempted first-degree murder.
He faces two counts of felony intentional child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury.
He faces two counts of felony negligent child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury.
An arrest warrant stated that the boy’s injuries were immediately apparent.
Yet Kiran Pasunuri allegedly failed to call for emergency medical help right away.
Investigators said the delay caused the child continued pain.
Investigators said the delay also resulted in an ongoing brain bleed and further injury.
WRAL initially reported that Kiran Pasunuri received a $200,000 secured bond in June.
On August 28, police charged Vasantha Pasunuri after further investigation and consultation with the Wake County District Attorney’s Office.
Prosecutors said investigators asked her how the toddler was injured.
According to prosecutors, she told the investigators to stop asking her questions.
Her defense attorney stated that she cooperated with Child Protective Services.
Her attorney said she visited her son almost every day under supervision.
The defense also offered the surrender of her Indian passport if she were released on bond.
Judge Mark Stevens denied bond.
ABC11 reported that Vasantha Pasunuri faces life in prison without parole if convicted.
On August 31, a bond hearing was held in the case.
Updated court records showed that both parents were jailed without bail as of August 31.
Both parents have been charged and neither has been convicted.
The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
