An 85-year-old resident was battered inside his room during an attack by a fellow care home resident, according to his family.
James Hand, 85, lived at Meadows Court care home in Aylestone, Leicestershire, England.
On September 28, 2022, another resident attacked Hand inside his own room at the facility, his family said.
The beating lasted for around 50 minutes, according to his relatives.
Hand had his own radio smashed repeatedly over his head during the assault, his family said.
The radio was struck against him hard enough that his son’s partner questioned how he survived. “How he didn’t kill him I have no idea,” Melanie Dolman said.
He was also struck with his own Zimmer frame and hit with a television remote, his family said.
The resident suffered severe bites to his fingers that went down to the bone, according to his family. Those wounds were serious enough that he may need plastic surgery or skin grafts, relatives said.

Hand also suffered a head wound that required stitches, according to his family.
Dolman said the attacker deliberately ripped the emergency call bell out of the wall. Pressure pads that should have triggered an automatic alert were also not working, she said.
Staff members only intervened once they were alerted to a resident in distress, according to the account.
Meadows Court said staff “took immediate action” once alerted, administered first aid, and called authorities.
Multiple investigations confirmed staff acted appropriately before, during, and after the attack, Meadows Court said. Those reviews included inquiries by Leicester City Council and the Care Quality Commission, according to the home.
Police arrested the other resident following the incident, authorities said.
After a medical assessment, the man was found not fit to be interviewed or subjected to any legal proceedings, police said. He was subsequently released into the care of the health service and will never face charges.
Hand has since moved to a new care facility located closer to his family in the West Midlands, relatives said.
His family said he is thriving at the home, where he is freshly shaved, well cared for, and happy.
