A 62-year-old Detroit man has been charged with second-degree murder after allegedly stabbing his sister’s boyfriend during a Labor Day barbecue dispute over how chicken was being cooked, authorities said.
Cleo Lawson, 62, had traveled from Detroit to Hazel Park, Michigan, for the gathering.
The holiday cookout was hosted by Lawson’s sister and her 60-year-old boyfriend, Kenneth Erwin Thomas.
An argument erupted between the men over how the chicken was being cooked, authorities said.
The confrontation escalated before Lawson allegedly stabbed Thomas, police said.

On September 7, police officers responded to the home around 5:20 p.m. following a report of a stabbing, officials said.
Paramedics attempted to save Thomas. He died from his injuries, police said.
The suspect was taken into custody following the stabbing, according to police.
On September 10, Lawson was formally arraigned on a charge of second-degree murder, records show.
A judge denied bond for the defendant. Lawson remains held in the Oakland County Jail, authorities said.
His next court appearance is scheduled for September 22.
