A 22-year-old recent college graduate who traveled to North Carolina found herself fighting to recover from catastrophic injuries after a violent attack.
Savannah Johnson had journeyed to the state while considering starting the next chapter of her life.
Johnson was originally from Michigan.
She had recently graduated from Northern Michigan University.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in illustration with a minor in psychology.
She was staying with relatives in North Carolina.
During her stay, she was exploring employment opportunities.
She was also considering relocating to the state.
On June 15, 2026, police officers responded to a residence in Wilmington, North Carolina.
The home was located in the Talon Court area.
Officers arrived at the scene and found Johnson critically injured.
According to Johnson’s family, she was in bed when someone entered the home.
The intruder attacked her.
The resulting injuries were devastating.
Johnson suffered fractures to her neck.
She suffered fractures to her upper back.
She sustained damage to blood vessels in her neck.
She suffered a vertebral artery dissection.
She also suffered a narrowing of her carotid artery.
Johnson required emergency spinal surgery.
She was placed on respiratory support.
Her mother said Savannah was initially paralyzed from the neck down.
Police initially arrested another man in connection with the attack.
Investigators continued examining the evidence.
On June 19, prosecutors dismissed the charges against the first man because of insufficient evidence after information emerged supporting his alibi.
But detectives kept working.
They conducted interviews.
They examined surveillance footage.
They analyzed evidence.
They followed information provided by the public.
On June 24, police arrested 26-year-old Isaac Ruiz of Onslow County.
Ruiz is an active-duty U.S. Marine.
He served as a mortarman with the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune.
Authorities initially charged Ruiz with first-degree burglary.
He was also charged with assault by strangulation.
He faced an additional charge of assault inflicting serious bodily injury.
Johnson’s father said Savannah had previously met Ruiz after the two were set up on a double date with another couple.
According to her family, Savannah did not reciprocate Ruiz’s romantic interest.
Her relatives believe his reaction to that rejection may have contributed to the attack.
Law enforcement has not publicly established a motive.
And Savannah began the difficult process of trying to regain what the attack had taken from her.
Her family reported that she gradually regained some movement in her arms, feet, hips and fingers.
She was eventually transferred to a rehabilitation facility in the Midwest.
The transfer was arranged for intensive spinal cord therapy.
Then, on August 24, the criminal case against Ruiz became considerably more serious.
A grand jury indicted him on additional charges.
The grand jury indicted Ruiz for attempted first-degree murder.
He was indicted for assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.
He was also indicted for robbery with a dangerous weapon.
Court records show investigators obtained search warrants for Ruiz’s iPhone.

Ruiz remains jailed on a $1 million secured bond.
He is scheduled for an administrative court hearing on October 12, 2026.
