“I NEEDED TO TAKE CARE OF HER”!!! BELIEVE IT OR NOT, POLICE SAY 33-YEAR-OLD TRUC MAI TOOK A THREE-YEAR-OLD GIRL FROM A VERMONT APARTMENT COMPLEX AND RETURNED HER 90 MINUTES LATER… AND NOW SHE IS BEING HELD WITHOUT BAIL AS AUTHORITIES WEIGH POSSIBLE KIDNAPPING CHARGES.
On August 25, 2026, officers responded to the Bobbin Mill Apartments in Burlington, Vermont.
Police were dispatched to the apartment complex at around 5 p.m.
A 3-year-old girl was reportedly taken while playing outside.
Investigators identified the suspect as 33-year-old Truc Mai of Colchester.
Police said Mai approached the toddler at the complex.
Then, according to police, Mai took the child from the apartment complex without permission.
Authorities did not disclose where Mai took the child.
But approximately 90 minutes later, investigators said Mai returned the toddler to the apartment complex.
Mai was taken into custody.

According to court documents, Mai told investigators that she saw the child and felt that she needed to take care of her.
She also reportedly said she felt as though she could have been the toddler’s biological mother.
Mai was ordered to undergo an emergency mental health screening.
Authorities said Mai has a prior criminal record.
That criminal history includes two felony and 11 misdemeanor convictions, according to authorities.
A judge ordered Mai held without bail.
As of August 27, Mai had not been arraigned.
And court documents indicated she may have been receiving treatment at the University of Vermont Medical Center.
Authorities said possible kidnapping charges remain under consideration.
The investigation remains ongoing.
The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
