Daniel Lopez, 60, gunned down sister on Pennsauken front steps before shooting himself: prosecutors

A 60-year-old brother shot his sister outside a southern New Jersey home Wednesday morning before turning the gun on himself, according to authorities.

Daniel Lopez, 60, shot Janet Camacho and left her to die on the front steps of the Pennsauken residence, according to the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office.

Police were called to the home on Bethel Avenue around 9 a.m. for a report of shots fired and a man armed with a handgun, officials said.

When officers arrived at the property, they found Camacho lying on the front stoop, officials said.

She was rushed to Cooper University Hospital, where medical personnel declared her dead shortly after, according to officials.

Authorities established a perimeter around the residence following the gunfire, WPVI reported.

Officers were seen escorting neighbors out of their homes as the scene was secured, the station reported.

Police deployed a robotic dog inside the house during the search, according to authorities.

Lopez was located inside the home dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound about 90 minutes after the initial call, police said.

Officials determined the deadly incident to be a murder-suicide, according to prosecutors.

Surveillance footage obtained by WPVI reportedly captured the shooting and showed a man pacing outside of the house. The television outlet determined the video was too graphic to air, WPVI reported.

Neighbor Michelle Jimenez said Lopez had been a close family friend.

“We used to invite him a lot for family parties. He would always be our guest. He was really close to our family. He was always nice. He would bake stuff for me and my siblings,” Jimenez told WPVI.

“It was just shocking to me. I didn’t believe it,” Jimenez said.

While investigators ruled the deaths a murder-suicide, the motive behind the gunfire remains under investigation, officials said.
