A suburban Chicago mother of four allegedly murdered her 2-year-old son and left him hanging from basement rafters before attempting suicide, according to court documents.
Corie Walsh, 40, lives in Frankfort, Illinois, a suburb southwest of Chicago.
Walsh is charged with murder in the death of her toddler son, Bennet Walsh, prosecutors said.
Walsh’s unnamed female neighbor entered the family’s home in Frankfort around 4 p.m. Tuesday, according to court documents obtained by CNN.
The neighbor found the toddler’s lifeless body hanging by a rope around his neck from rafters in the basement, according to court documents. His feet were off the ground.
The neighbor removed the ligature and lowered the boy to the ground, according to court documents.
She immediately began performing CPR on the toddler, court records state. She called 911 while trying to revive him.
First responders rushed Bennet to a hospital, where he died, according to officials.
The same neighbor then went upstairs and found Walsh in a bloody bathtub, according to court documents.
Walsh was actively harming herself with a knife and had sustained slashes to her wrists and thighs, according to court documents. The neighbor took the knife out of Walsh’s hands and threw it into the sink.
She then pressed a towel over Walsh’s thigh wound, according to court records.
Walsh asked the neighbor why she took the knife away as she was trying to kill herself, according to court documents.
The mother told the neighbor that “Bear” was in the basement, according to court documents. That was Walsh’s nickname for her slain son.

Walsh spoke with police officers while being treated in the hospital, court records state.
She described to police how she killed the boy, which prosecutors said was “consistent with the evidence in this case,” according to court documents.
Walsh told police officers she believed the boy was the “devil,” according to court documents.
The mother also told investigators she believed her son was the “anti-Christ,” according to court records.
The alleged killing occurred just hours after Walsh had discussed the trial of Lindsay Clancy, officials said.
The Clancy case has captivated the nation over her claim that postpartum psychosis made her legally insane when she strangled her three children to death with exercise bands, according to reports.
Clancy’s murder trial, which gripped the nation for more than six weeks, ended in a hung jury and mistrial on Friday, court records show. A jury could not reach a verdict on whether to convict her of murdering her three children with plastic bands or whether she should be found not guilty by reason of insanity.
Clancy’s defense team claimed she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and overprescribed powerful psychiatric medications, reports state.
Walsh’s defense attorney is similarly claiming that the mother suffered a psychotic episode before she killed her young son, according to ABC 7 Chicago.
Defense attorney Andrea Lyon told the station that the mother of four “was experiencing a psychotic episode.”
“This is a tragedy, for the Walsh family all of whom are mourning the loss of this child,” attorney Andrea Lyon said.
“It is our hope that through a thorough presentation and investigation of the facts, that all of us will come to see this heartbreak for what it is,” Lyon said.
