BELIEVE IT OR NOT, AUTHORITIES SAY A FORMER MICHIGAN ATTORNEY FATALLY SHOT A MAN HE CALLED HIS GOOD FRIEND INSIDE A BAR BATHROOM… AND A JUDGE HAS NOW SENTENCED HIM TO UP TO 40 YEARS IN PRISON.
A former Michigan attorney has been sentenced to prison for fatally shooting a man inside a bar bathroom.
Evan Dixon, 62, was sentenced on Monday.
He had previously pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.
The conviction stems from the 2023 killing of 53-year-old Theron Duncan.
In November 2023, authorities said, Duncan was fatally shot.
The shooting occurred inside the bathroom of the Douglass House Saloon.
The bar is located in Houghton.
Dixon was originally charged with first-degree murder in the case.
He was also charged with a felony firearm offense.
But those charges were dismissed as part of a plea agreement.
The agreement was reached in June.
Under the terms of the deal, Dixon pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.
Prosecutors said the plea agreement was reached in consultation with Duncan’s family.
The family wanted the case brought to an end, prosecutors said.
Before being sentenced on Monday, Dixon addressed the court.

He spoke for about 15 minutes.
In his statement, Dixon described Duncan as his “good friend.”
He insisted that there had been no dispute between them.
“I can’t change what happened,” Dixon told the court.
“I can’t even explain what happened.”
Duncan’s mother also addressed the court during the hearing.
Duncan’s daughter spoke to the court as well.
They described the lasting impact his death has had on the family.
His daughter said her children will now grow up knowing their grandfather only through stories.
Those children include a baby she is currently expecting.
Then Judge Matthew Wiese sentenced Dixon to 18 to 40 years.
Dixon was granted credit for 1,023 days already served.
At 62 years old, the sentence could effectively mean Dixon spends the remainder of his life in prison.
And the original counts were set aside in exchange for the second-degree murder plea.
The first-degree murder charge was dismissed.
The firearm charge was dismissed.
The sentence is 18 to 40 years.
