A 45-year-old Georgia man has been sentenced to life in prison following a fatal shooting outside a Canton home.
A Cherokee County jury found David Henry Daniel guilty in the death of 44-year-old Michael Kyle Reid.
Daniel, of Canton, was convicted of felony murder.
The jury also found Daniel guilty of aggravated assault.
In addition, jurors convicted him of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
But the jury acquitted Daniel of malice murder.
Jurors deliberated for more than nine hours before returning the verdicts.
On Aug. 21, 2025, the fatal shooting occurred outside a residence on North Lake Drive.
Prosecutors said tensions between Daniel and Reid had been escalating for days.
The dispute began after Reid started communicating with Daniel’s on-again, off-again girlfriend.
Text messages reportedly documented the growing conflict.
Social media activity also reportedly recorded the escalating friction.
The conflict between the two men spanned three days.
Authorities said Reid arrived at the Canton home.
Daniel then ran out of the residence.
Authorities said Daniel shot Reid within seconds of his arrival.
Deputies responded to the scene on North Lake Drive.
They arrived to find Reid lying on the carport floor.
Reid had suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the chest.
Investigators recovered the .22-caliber pistol used in the shooting.
The firearm was found on the hood of a vehicle parked in the driveway.
Prosecutors said Daniel gave investigators conflicting accounts of the incident.
He first described the shooting to investigators as accidental.
Yet Daniel later claimed to investigators that he acted in self-defense.
Judge Tony Baker sentenced Daniel to life in prison with the possibility of parole.
Under the sentence, Daniel will be eligible for parole after serving 30 years.
The prison term is to be followed by five years of probation.
Judge Baker also ordered Daniel to forfeit his firearms.
Daniel was ordered to have no contact with Reid’s family.
And the court ordered Daniel to stay out of Cherokee County.
A three-day conflict ended with one man dead.
Another man now faces at least three decades behind bars.
