A 50-year-old Indianapolis man allegedly shot his ex-girlfriend and killed her new boyfriend during a violent attack, police said.
Bertony Theagene, 50, faces murder and attempted murder charges following the deadly encounter.
On August 31, 2026, officers were dispatched to an apartment complex on Bayside Drive after reports of gunfire.
When officers arrived, they found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound and a critically injured man. The male victim, identified as 33-year-old Venel Emile, later died at the hospital.
Theagene allegedly entered his ex-girlfriend’s apartment after learning that another man was with her, according to investigators.
The surviving victim told police that the suspect entered the bedroom and opened fire.

Theagene allegedly fled the apartment and hid underneath a nearby staircase, where an officer eventually discovered him with a firearm.
The suspect attempted to shoot himself in the head, but the gun failed to fire, police said. He ultimately surrendered to authorities.
During questioning, the defendant allegedly admitted to shooting the victims but claimed the shooting was accidental, investigators said.
Theagene reportedly said he brought the gun because he did not know whether his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend was armed.
He also allegedly told investigators that after the gunfire, he believed he would spend the rest of his life in prison and had wanted to “take the easy way out.”
The accused remains in custody without bond at the Marion County Jail as the case remains ongoing.
