Iowa mother jailed in 3-year-old son’s hot car death: ‘Instead of stopping, she became better at hiding it’

“I FOUND HIM IN THE GARAGE”!!! BELIEVE IT OR NOT, AUTHORITIES SAY TIFFANI HUFF HOLMES FORGOT HER THREE-YEAR-OLD SON IN A HOT CAR WHILE DRINKING… AND SHE HAS NOW BEEN SENTENCED TO TWO YEARS IN PRISON.

On June 28, 2025, emergency crews responded to an urgent call in Bondurant, Iowa.

First responders arrived at around 2:40 p.m. at the 3400 block of Hawthorn Drive Southwest.

A 3-year-old boy had been found unresponsive at the property.

Upon arrival, medics attempted to revive the child.

Their efforts to save him were unsuccessful.

The victim was identified as 3-year-old Myles Holmes.

His mother, 42-year-old Tiffani Huff Holmes, initially spoke with law enforcement officers at the scene.

She told investigators that she woke up and found her son inside the garage.

But evidence gathered later showed that account was not true.

Holmes had consumed alcohol before driving with three children that day.

After returning home, she forgot Myles inside the vehicle parked in the driveway.

She then continued drinking.

Temperatures exceeded 90 degrees that day.

Myles died from overheating.

Holmes was later charged with child endangerment resulting in death.

On July 21, 2026, she pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, an aggravated misdemeanor.

During sentencing proceedings, prosecutors acknowledged that Holmes had taken steps toward sobriety.

However, prosecutors said she had undergone treatment at least three times before Myles’ death and continued drinking.

District Judge Samantha Gronewald also noted that Holmes continued consuming alcohol excessively after her son died.

Holmes told the court she had since completed both inpatient and outpatient treatment.

She stated that she had lived in a sober living home for a year.

She added that she regularly attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

“I feel remorse, regret and pure hatred toward myself,” Holmes told the judge.

The child’s father, Marcus Holmes, also addressed the court during the hearing.

He told the court he wanted Holmes to have a relationship with their other child if she could remain sober.

Yet he stated that he also wanted accountability for his son’s death.

“I begged her to stop drinking numerous times,” he said.

“Instead of stopping, she became better at hiding it.”

On August 28, 2026, Gronewald denied Holmes’ request for probation.

The judge sentenced Holmes to the maximum sentence of two years in prison.

Gronewald cited Myles’ death in handing down the penalty.

The judge also cited the “severe and lasting emotional harm” caused by the case.
