A Florida man sentenced to spend the rest of his life behind bars for a murder committed when he was 16 years old has received a new sentence.
The resentencing comes after he served approximately 28 years in prison.
The case dates back to 1998 in Miami, Florida.
According to the case account, 18-year-old Ronniqueka was sitting inside a vehicle with her boyfriend.
Johnathan and another person approached the pair in a dark-colored vehicle.
Then came a barrage of bullets.
Authorities said the pair fired approximately 14 times at the vehicle.
Investigators determined that seven of those shots were fired from Johnathan’s .45-caliber handgun.
But Ronniqueka and her boyfriend reportedly were not even the people the attackers intended to target.
They had been caught in an attack meant for someone else.
Ronniqueka was killed in the gunfire.
Johnathan and his accomplice were subsequently prosecuted for the fatal shooting.

Both defendants were convicted of first-degree murder.
Johnathan received a life sentence.
Yet because Johnathan was only 16 years old when the crime occurred, his sentence eventually became eligible for judicial review.
Florida law provides certain juvenile offenders serving lengthy sentences an opportunity for a judge to reconsider their punishment after a specified period behind bars.
During that review, the court can consider factors such as the offender’s maturity.
The judge is also permitted to consider rehabilitation.
The court can evaluate remorse.
The review also allows consideration of the circumstances at the time of the crime.
After approximately 28 years behind bars, Johnathan received that review.
His life sentence was reduced to 40 years in prison.
That prison term is to be followed by 10 years of probation.
Johnathan is now 45 years old.
If the revised sentence remains in place and he ultimately serves the full 40-year prison term as described, he could be released around 2038.
That potential release would occur approximately four decades after the murder that sent him to prison as a teenager.
