A 36-year-old New Mexico woman has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the death of her 11-month-old son, Basil Stoner.
The plea brings the case to the sentencing stage.
Madeline Daly admitted killing Basil inside an RV near Silver City, New Mexico.
According to authorities, the shooting occurred on December 23, 2025.
The death followed an escalating custody dispute involving the baby’s father.
In late 2025, a Wyoming court granted Basil’s father shared custody.
According to authorities, Daly allegedly refused to comply with the ruling.
She disappeared with the child.
Investigators say Daly sent the father a message during the dispute.
In the message, she declared that he would “never be a part of his child’s life.”
The father subsequently obtained an emergency custody order.
Authorities then attempted to locate Daly and Basil.
Yet an Amber Alert reportedly was not issued during the search.
Authorities said there was not sufficient evidence at that point showing Basil faced “immediate danger.”

Then came December 23.
Grant County deputies tracked Daly and her infant son to an RV park near Silver City.
Authorities attempted to negotiate with Daly at the scene.
But investigators say that during the encounter, Daly pointed a 9 mm handgun directly toward her 11-month-old son’s face.
Investigators say she fired the weapon.
Basil died.
Daly was subsequently charged with first-degree murder.
She has now pleaded guilty to the charge as part of a plea agreement.
Her defense has argued that Daly feared for Basil’s safety if she surrendered the child.
The judge has delayed sentencing in the case.
The delay comes while the judge reviews the circumstances and evidence surrounding the case.
For Basil’s grieving family, the case involves far more than court orders, custody disputes and criminal charges.
They remember an 11-month-old little boy who was happy.
They remember a boy who loved being outdoors.
And they remember a child who especially liked blueberries.
