BELIEVE IT OR NOT, AUTHORITIES SAY A NORTH CAROLINA MAN ALLEGEDLY OPENED FIRE ON HIS ESTRANGED WIFE AS SHE DROVE A CHEVROLET SUV NEAR BATTLEBORO… AND HE IS NOW BEING HELD WITHOUT BOND IN NASH COUNTY FACING AN ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGE.
On August 16, 2026, deputies responded to a shooting at 5845 North Carolina Highway 48 near Battleboro, North Carolina.
Upon arrival, Marhlycia Erinette Williams spoke with investigators.
She told investigators that her estranged husband had allegedly opened fire while she was driving.
At the time of the gunfire, she was driving a white Chevrolet SUV.
The man she named to investigators was 34-year-old Robert Earl Williams III.
Multiple bullets struck the vehicle during the incident.
Williams was not injured.
Robert Williams was not taken into custody at the scene.
On August 26, 2026, deputies stopped his vehicle on Interstate 87 near Highway 540 in Wake County, North Carolina.
During that traffic stop, deputies allegedly recovered a stolen 9mm handgun from the vehicle.
But authorities have not publicly confirmed whether the recovered firearm was used during the August 16 shooting.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive in the case.
Nor have authorities publicly disclosed what allegedly led to the shooting.

Williams was arrested following the stop.
In Nash County, he was charged with attempted murder.
He was also charged in Nash County with discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle.
And additional charges were filed against him in Wake County.
In Wake County, Williams was charged with possession of a stolen firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.
A passenger was also inside the vehicle during the stop in Wake County.
Authorities identified that passenger as Za’nya Key’ara Morris-Carter.
Morris-Carter was charged in Wake County with possession of a stolen firearm.
She was also charged in Wake County with carrying a concealed weapon.
Yet authorities have not publicly stated that Morris-Carter was involved in the shooting.
Authorities have also not explained her relationship to Williams.
Williams was subsequently transferred to the Nash County Detention Center.
He is being held there without bond.
The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
