On the morning of Saturday, June 13, 2026, police officers in Houston, Texas, initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling along a downtown roadway.
Officers stopped the car following an observed traffic violation.
The driver of the vehicle identified himself to police as 36-year-old James Harden.
Harden is a former NBA Most Valuable Player and spent nine seasons as a veteran member of the Houston Rockets.
He is currently a player for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Prior to being pulled over by officers, Harden had been out at a local hookah lounge with a group of friends.
According to court documents, officers conducting the stop discovered a handgun sitting inside the car in plain view.
Court documents state that the firearm was not carried inside a holster.

Officers placed Harden into custody at 3:41 a.m.
He was subsequently booked on a misdemeanor charge of unlawful carrying of a weapon.
Later that same morning, Harden was released from custody after securing a $100 personal bond.
His arraignment on the misdemeanor offense had originally been scheduled on the court calendar for June 22.
But that initial arraignment date was subsequently postponed.
The proceeding has since been pushed back to August 3.
To lead his defense, Harden has retained Texas attorney Rusty Hardin.
Hardin previously represented NFL quarterback Deshaun Watson.
And the legal matter now awaits its rescheduled August date on the court docket.
The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
