A 58-year-old registered sex offender has been taken into custody in Santa Rosa.
Police identified the arrested man as Darren Petricka.
The arrest followed a report that a young teenager was touched inappropriately by an adult man.
The reported incident occurred at a shopping center on Montecito Boulevard.
On Aug. 22, police received the report and formally launched an investigation.
Authorities said the alleged touching had occurred the previous day.
Investigators reviewed commercial surveillance footage from the shopping center.
From that footage, detectives successfully obtained an image of the suspect.

Four days later, an off-duty Marin County sheriff’s deputy reportedly spotted Petricka in Santa Rosa.
The off-duty deputy recognized him as matching the suspect’s description.
Responding officers quickly detained him.
Then detectives executed a search of his residence on Humboldt Street.
Police said electronic devices and other evidence were seized from the property.
Petricka was already a registered sex offender prior to the new investigation.
He is now facing a felony charge of lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14.
And the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office is handling the case.
The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
