A Wyoming mother has been convicted after fatally shooting her 11-month-old son in the face.
Authorities stated that she carried out the shooting so that the child’s father could never obtain custody of him.
The 6th Judicial District Attorney’s Office said in a statement that the infant died on December 23, 2025.
The fatal shooting occurred inside an RV located near Silver City, New Mexico.
Authorities identified the mother as 36-year-old Madeline Veronique Daly.
The district attorney’s office did not identify the victim by name in its official statement.
The infant’s name was revealed as Basil in a GoFundMe campaign established to assist his father, Jake Stoner.
Throughout their investigation, authorities learned that Daly had taken Basil from Wyoming to New Mexico.
She transported the child despite an existing court order that had granted Stoner emergency custody of the boy.
As a result of taking the infant, Daly faced kidnapping charges in Wyoming.
Her location in New Mexico was discovered after she submitted a job application in the area.
An interviewer conducted a background check on Daly during the employment process.
That background check revealed an active warrant for her arrest on kidnapping charges, according to an affidavit obtained by Cowboy State Daily.
The job interviewer then contacted law enforcement.
On December 23, 2025, Grant County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a rural property in New Mexico.
Deputies arrived at the location after learning about the active kidnapping charges against Daly from Wyoming.
Law enforcement officers located Daly at a bunkhouse on the property.

Once officers found her, Daly attempted to flee the scene by running toward a nearby RV.
Deputies quickly surrounded the vehicle.
They secured the area outside and waited to obtain a search warrant before attempting to go inside.
Then deputies heard a gunshot from inside the RV before they were able to enter.
Officers immediately rushed into the vehicle.
Inside the RV, deputies discovered that Daly had shot Basil with a 9mm handgun.
Emergency medical personnel arrived to treat the infant.
Investigators said that “medical staff worked on the child, but they were unable to save his life due to the gunshot wound to the face,” according to the affidavit.
The infant died from the injury.
Deputies took Daly into custody on the same day.
After her arrest, Daly allegedly told police that she thought it was “worth it” to kill her son so that his father and paternal relatives would not be granted custody of him.
Daly also told investigators she believed her son “would have been in danger and molested if she would have stepped out of that trailer,” according to the affidavit.
And she stated that the child’s father “never wanted anything to do with [him], financially, physically, emotionally ever,” the affidavit states.
Prosecutors initially charged Daly with first-degree murder and child abuse.
She was also facing kidnapping charges.
On Monday, August 24, Daly ultimately pleaded guilty to murder.
It is not currently clear what came of the child abuse or kidnapping charges she was facing.
Her sentencing is scheduled to take place at a later date.
