An Indiana woman already accused of neglecting her relatives is now facing a charge connected to her brother’s death.
Kathryn Ann Payton, 51, has been charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death.
The charge follows the death of her developmentally delayed brother, Christopher Leach.
Leach died after being admitted to a hospital in May.
An autopsy reportedly determined that Leach died from malnutrition and dehydration.
Those fatal conditions were caused by complications from neglect.
The situation was first discovered on May 1.
A pest control technician entered the apartment that day to conduct a routine treatment.
Inside the residence, the worker encountered an occupant who appeared ill.
The resident was covered in waste.
Police officers were subsequently dispatched to the residence to carry out a welfare check.
Upon entering, officers found Payton’s medically frail father and her developmentally delayed brother.
The conditions inside the apartment were so severe that responding officers reported feeling nauseated.
Both men were allegedly covered in urine and feces.
Investigators documented human and animal waste scattered across the floors.
Waste was also found on furniture and bedding throughout the residence.
Officers even discovered waste on the pillow where Payton’s father slept.
One of the men reportedly had clothing soaked in waste all the way down to his knees.

That man was also found with dangerously low oxygen levels.
The other man was unable to stand without physical assistance.
He had open sores.
He was also suffering from a rattling cough.
Payton identified herself to authorities as the primary caregiver for both men.
But investigators say she admitted being fully aware of the living conditions inside the residence.
She allegedly told police she refused to help the men clean themselves because she wanted to “teach them a lesson.”
Payton allegedly confiscated their television when they failed to clean themselves.
She also allegedly took away their Amazon Fire Stick as punishment.
Authorities determined that both men lacked the mental ability to properly care for themselves.
Officials determined they lacked the physical ability to care for themselves as well.
Police also learned about the living arrangements.
Payton allegedly lived in a separate residence.
That separate home was a property owned by her father.
Meanwhile, the two dependent men remained alone in the apartment.
And Payton still faces a separate neglect charge involving her surviving father.
A pretrial conference in the case is scheduled for Sept. 28.
Her trial is currently scheduled for February 2027.
The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
