“I FELT LIKE I NEEDED TO TAKE CARE OF HER”!!! BELIEVE IT OR NOT, POLICE SAY A VERMONT WOMAN TOOK A 3-YEAR-OLD GIRL FROM OUTSIDE AN APARTMENT COMPLEX AND RETURNED HER 90 MINUTES LATER… AND SHE IS NOW BEING HELD WITHOUT BAIL AS AUTHORITIES WEIGH KIDNAPPING CHARGES.
A 33-year-old Vermont woman was taken into custody after police say she abducted a 3-year-old girl from outside an apartment complex.
Police said the woman returned the toddler approximately an hour and a half later.
At around 5 p.m. on August 25, 2026, officers responded to the Bobbin Mill Apartments in Burlington.
The response followed a report that a toddler had been taken while playing outside.
Investigators identified the woman as Truc Mai, 33, of Colchester.
Police said Mai approached the 3-year-old outside the complex.
She then took the child away from the apartment complex without permission, according to police.
The child remained missing for approximately 90 minutes.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed where Mai allegedly took the toddler.
They have also not disclosed what occurred during the time the child was gone.
Then, investigators say, Mai returned.
Police said Mai brought the 3-year-old back to the apartment complex.
Officers took her into custody at the scene.
According to court documents, Mai gave investigators an explanation for allegedly taking the child.
Mai reportedly stated that when she saw the girl, she felt she needed to take care of her.
She also allegedly told investigators that she felt as though she could have been the toddler’s biological mother.
Following her arrest, Mai was ordered to undergo an emergency mental health screening.
Authorities said Mai’s previous criminal history includes two felony convictions.
Her record also includes 11 misdemeanor convictions, according to authorities.
A judge ordered her held without bail.
As of August 27, Mai had not been arraigned.
Court documents indicated she may have been receiving treatment at the University of Vermont Medical Center.
Authorities said possible kidnapping charges remain under consideration.
Investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
No kidnapping charge has been proven in court.
And the investigation remains ongoing.
The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
