A South Carolina woman is accused of turning an ordinary rideshare call into a violent carjacking.
The incident left a Lyft driver hospitalized with multiple stab wounds.
According to police reports, 22-year-old Naziyha Lanay Weatherall requested a Lyft shortly before 2:30 p.m. on April 22.
She asked the driver to pick her up from an apartment complex in Greenville.
Police say the driver arrived at the complex expecting to transport a passenger.
Instead, investigators allege Weatherall approached his vehicle and stabbed him directly in the head.
Authorities say she then pulled the knife out.
She stabbed him approximately 10 additional times across his body, according to police.
And police allege the violence was immediately followed by a carjacking.
Investigators say Weatherall took possession of the driver’s vehicle and fled the scene.
She left the wounded man behind at the exact location where he had arrived to pick her up, according to authorities.
Police and emergency personnel responded to the apartment complex shortly afterward.
The injured driver was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Weatherall was located by law enforcement a short time later.
Officers placed her under arrest.
Yet her defense attorneys have since presented details regarding her state of mind during the encounter.
Weatherall’s legal team has raised her mental condition at the time of the incident as an important issue in the case.
According to her defense, Weatherall was experiencing a “mental health crisis” when the encounter occurred.
Her attorneys stated that she believed someone was watching her.
Her defense counsel says she had actually requested the Lyft because she wanted to be driven to a police station.
She intended to report what she believed was happening to her, according to her attorneys.
But police allege she instead attacked the driver who arrived to transport her.
Authorities allege she stabbed him repeatedly before taking his car.
Weatherall faces criminal charges in connection with the attack.
The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
