A 57-year-old Florida ex-con allegedly forced his way into a man’s home with a hammer over a pile of dumped wood, deputies said.
Michael Aaron Bennett, 57, lived in a travel camper on a shared property in Sorrento.
Bennett resided in the camper on the shared grounds, deputies said. He had no permission to enter the main house, according to investigators.
On the morning of April 30, 2024, Bennett got upset that a large pile of wood had been dumped on the property, deputies said.
The camper resident then went looking for a fight over the wood, according to deputies.
Bennett allegedly opened a closed door with a hammer in his hand, deputies said.
The suspect then forced his way inside the residence, according to law enforcement.
Once inside, Bennett entered into a physical altercation with the 66-year-old man who lived there, deputies said.
The victim yelled for his brother, who ran in to help, deputies said.
Between the two of them, they got Bennett detained until responding deputies arrived, according to the report.
The victim came away with a small cut on his forearm, deputies said. He told deputies he was not sure whether the cut came from the hammer or the struggle itself, and he did not need paramedics.
Bennett was charged with armed burglary and aggravated battery on a person 65 or older, records show.
The arrest was not his first time in trouble, records show. The defendant carries prior convictions for trafficking in stolen property and burglary, according to court documents.
The ex-con also has prior convictions for felony DUI and battery on a law enforcement officer, according to records.
His bond was set at $30,000, court records show.
As of the initial report, Bennett had not paid the bond and remained in custody, records show.
