A 33-year-old Des Moines man has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison.
The sentence comes after authorities say Tyler Boyd Pavlick secretly placed cameras inside portable toilets at multiple public events.
Authorities stated that Pavlick took the actions to record children using the bathroom.
Pavlick pleaded guilty to three counts of child exploitation.
He also entered a guilty plea to one count of possession of child pornography.
According to court records, Pavlick hid cameras inside portable toilets at three Central Iowa events during 2025.
The targeted locations included co-ed middle school and high school cross-country meets.
Authorities say his goal was to capture footage of minors using the toilets.
The first hidden camera was uncovered during a cross-country meet held in State Center.
Participants at that athletic event noticed a suspicious device positioned inside a porta-potty.

Those participants immediately alerted law enforcement to what they had discovered.
Then, a few days later, investigators learned about another similar incident.
That second report originated from the Harvest & Handmade Fair in Des Moines.
Digital evidence gathered in the case eventually led police directly to Pavlick’s apartment.
Inside the residence, authorities say they discovered the same type of mini cameras that had been seized at the earlier locations.
One of the recovered devices reportedly contained video recorded at a separate cross-country meet in Osceola.
That recording included footage of a child under 12 years old using the porta-potty.
But prosecutors stated this was not random surveillance.
Prosecutors said the cameras were deliberately placed in spaces where children had every expectation of complete privacy.
After Pavlick serves his 20-year federal prison sentence, he will face 10 years of supervised release.
He is also required to register as a sex offender.
There is no parole in the federal prison system.
