On August 25, police arrested Norma Angelica Martinez-Medrano in Texas.
The 41-year-old worked as an employee at a daycare in Laredo.
Authorities said a 2-year-old boy in her care walked through an unsecured front door.
The toddler had only recently started attending the facility.
He wandered alone directly into heavy street traffic.
Witnesses said an 18-wheeler nearly hit the toddler.
Several motorists spotted the boy on his own shortly before 2 p.m.
The child was walking near the intersection of Chihuahua Street and Malinche Avenue.
But one passing driver stopped her vehicle.
She picked the toddler up from the roadway.
The driver kept the child safe until police officers arrived at the scene.
The toddler’s mother later thanked the motorist who intervened.
She said she believes that woman is the reason her son is still alive.

Investigators examined how the child managed to leave the property.
Police determined that the boy walked out because the daycare’s main entrance was not properly secured.
Investigators consulted with the local district attorney’s office regarding the incident.
Then police arrested Martinez-Medrano on child endangerment allegations.
She was charged with abandoning or endangering a child with intent to return.
The charge is classified as a state jail felony.
If convicted, she faces between 180 days and two years in state jail.
The statute also carries a possible fine of up to $10,000.
Martinez-Medrano posted a $3,000 bond following her arrest.
She was released from custody that same day.
