An argument regarding the delivery of a television allegedly turned deadly at a Minnesota residence on August 29.
The confrontation resulted in the death of a 27-year-old man and led to a murder charge against his sister’s 20-year-old boyfriend.
On August 29, 27-year-old Demarcus Gibson-Beard travelled to his mother’s home in Minnesota alongside his fiancée.
The couple had arrived at the residence specifically to deliver a television.
At the time of their arrival, 20-year-old Alvin James Smith of Wisconsin was also present inside the home.
Smith was staying at the residence as the boyfriend of Demarcus’ sister.
According to the allegations, Demarcus asked Smith to assist him in moving the television from the vehicle into the house.
Smith allegedly interpreted the request as a sign of disrespect.
An argument followed between the two men over the request.
Then the dispute escalated into a physical confrontation between Demarcus and Smith.
Authorities allege that Smith pulled a handgun during the fight.
He allegedly shot Demarcus in the head.
Emergency responders rushed Demarcus from the scene to a nearby hospital.
He later died from his injuries.
Police say Smith fled the residence immediately after the shooting took place.
He took the handgun with him when he ran.
Following his flight from the home, Smith called his girlfriend.
During that call, Smith allegedly told her that he did not want to go to jail.

He also allegedly told her that he wanted to take his own life.
Law enforcement officers subsequently established communication with Smith.
Officers eventually convinced him to return to the scene of the shooting.
He was arrested upon his return.
Authorities also recovered the handgun.
Smith later told investigators that the confrontation was more complicated than an argument over a television.
According to Smith, Demarcus had slapped both him and his girlfriend before the shooting occurred.
Smith claimed he produced the handgun to defend himself and her.
But investigators reportedly received conflicting witness accounts about whether Demarcus actually attacked Smith or his sister.
Smith also allegedly made a statement to investigators regarding his actions during the confrontation.
“I know where I f—ing aimed.”
The shooting reportedly came amid existing tension inside the household.
Demarcus’ mother told police she had repeatedly asked Smith and her daughter to move out of her home.
They had refused to leave the residence.
That refusal had created ongoing friction before the fatal confrontation took place.
Smith has been charged with second-degree murder.
He is being held in the Ramsey County Jail.
Bail for Smith has been set at $1 million.
His claim that he acted in defense of himself and his girlfriend has not been adjudicated in court.
The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
